Finding Success Beyond the Hustle: Bob Healey’s Journey
Entrepreneur, philanthropist, and world traveler Bob Healey shares his journey from running a family empire to embracing mindfulness and impact-driven leadership. Discover how stepping beyond the grind leads to true success.
Introduction
Success isn’t just about grinding 24/7—it’s about building something meaningful. I’ve spent my career running businesses, growing empires, and, at times, questioning what it all means. From luxury yacht manufacturing to real estate, insurance, and philanthropy, I’ve seen the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.
In this episode of Heart of the Hustle, hosted by my good friend Sherry Sutton, we unpack my journey—how I built businesses, why I walked away from corporate life, and what I’ve learned about legacy, balance, and the power of storytelling.
The Evolution of an Entrepreneur – From Boats to Business Empires
I didn’t just stumble into entrepreneurship—I was born into it. From the time I could walk, I was surrounded by the world of business. My family didn’t just run a company; they built a legacy in yacht manufacturing that would grow to become a global industry leader.
Growing up in New Jersey, our business revolved around building some of the finest sportfishing yachts in the world. These weren’t just boats; they were symbols of craftsmanship, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of perfection. We set the industry standard for quality and performance, and through decades of hard work, we turned that company into a powerhouse in the luxury marine industry.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that success isn’t about staying in one lane. The business world is constantly evolving—markets shift, economies fluctuate, and consumer demands change. If you’re not adaptable, you risk being left behind. That’s why my journey didn’t stop at yachts. Instead of resting on past successes, I expanded my vision, seeking new opportunities that would diversify and strengthen my portfolio.
Diversifying for Longevity
One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is putting all their eggs in one basket. Even a highly successful business can become vulnerable overnight due to factors outside your control. Economic downturns, industry disruptions, new competitors, or even global crises—any of these can flip your world upside down.
I saw this firsthand in the yacht manufacturing industry. While we remained at the top, I knew that building long-term wealth and stability meant expanding beyond a single market. So, my family and I made a strategic decision: We wouldn’t just be yacht manufacturers—we would be investors, innovators, and philanthropists.
That’s how we expanded into real estate, insurance, and philanthropy. These industries not only provided financial security but also allowed us to make a greater impact on the world.
Here’s what I’ve built over the years:
✔️ Luxury Yacht Manufacturing – The family business that put us on the map, producing world-class sportfishing yachts used by enthusiasts, professionals, and industry leaders.
✔️ Real Estate Investments – A strong portfolio of multifamily apartments, commercial properties, and development projects, ensuring steady income streams and long-term growth.
✔️ Insurance – A key investment in financial security, providing businesses and families with the protection they need to weather unexpected challenges.
✔️ Philanthropy – My true passion lies in giving back, from funding education programs for at-risk youth to supporting healthcare initiatives that improve lives.
The Entrepreneurial Mindset: Adapt, Evolve, and Keep Looking Ahead
If there’s one lesson every entrepreneur should learn, it’s this: Don’t get comfortable. The minute you think you’ve made it, you’re already falling behind. Innovation and adaptability are the keys to long-term success.
For me, business isn’t just about making money—it’s about building something that lasts. That’s why I’ve never been afraid to step into new industries, take calculated risks, and push beyond my comfort zone. Diversification isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
If you want to build a legacy, don’t just focus on one thing. Keep evolving, stay open to new opportunities, and always think beyond the hustle.
Success Isn’t Just About Hustle – The Power of Mindfulness
For most of my life, I believed that success was about grinding day and night, working harder, pushing through exhaustion, and never slowing down. That was the mindset I was raised with—the idea that if you weren’t constantly moving forward, you were falling behind. And for a while, it worked.
I built businesses. I expanded into new industries. I worked insane hours, made sacrifices, and kept going. But then, something changed.
I hit a wall.
Not a financial wall, not a business failure—something deeper. I realized that no amount of work would ever be enough if I wasn’t truly fulfilled.
That’s when I started to rethink everything I thought I knew about success.
How Yoga and Travel Changed My Perspective
If you had told me years ago that yoga and mindfulness would change my life, I probably would have laughed. But that’s exactly what happened.
I went on a yoga retreat to Colombia, thinking it would be a short escape, a break from the usual grind. Instead, it shifted my entire perspective on life and business.
For the first time in years, I stopped moving. I let go of the need to always be in control. And when I did that, I started to see things differently.
I realized how much space I had been denying myself—space to think, to breathe, to reflect. When you’re constantly in motion, you don’t give yourself the chance to step back and see the bigger picture.
That’s what this retreat gave me: clarity, self-awareness, and a new understanding of what real success looks like.
What I Learned About Success and Mindfulness
🔥 Success comes when you slow down and realign.
This wasn’t just about yoga—it was about shifting my mindset. Instead of hustling mindlessly, I started working with purpose. Instead of burning myself out, I began to focus on what truly mattered.
Here are three of the biggest lessons I learned:
✅ Presence over productivity – We’re taught that the more we do, the more successful we are. But that’s a lie. True success comes when you are fully present in your work, your decisions, and your relationships. A clear, focused mind makes better business decisions than a tired, overworked one.
✅ Emotional resilience matters more than stress endurance – Leadership isn’t about who can handle the most stress—it’s about who can navigate challenges with a clear mind and a steady heart. Learning to breathe through stress, rather than react to it, has made me a stronger, calmer, and more effective leader.
✅ The power of stepping away – Some of my best ideas, biggest breakthroughs, and most important realizations have come when I gave myself permission to step away from the grind. Whether it’s a weekend off, an afternoon unplugged, or a week-long retreat, stepping back allows creativity and clarity to thrive.
Mindfulness in Business: Working Smarter, Not Harder
I still work hard—I love what I do. But now, I work smarter, not harder. And that shift has been a game changer.
I’ve learned that hustle alone doesn’t create success. Alignment does. Clarity does. Purpose does.
Entrepreneurs don’t talk about this enough. We glorify the grind, the sleepless nights, the constant work. But what if the key to success isn’t in doing more—but in doing the right things, with the right energy, at the right time?
That’s what mindfulness has given me—the ability to lead with intention, build with clarity, and create a legacy that’s not just about work, but about meaning.
And I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
Legacy, Impact, and Giving Back
Success means nothing if it doesn’t create something bigger than you. I’ve spent my career building businesses, growing wealth, and expanding into new industries, but at the end of the day, what truly matters is the impact we leave behind.
I come from a family that didn’t just focus on business success—we focused on creating opportunities for others. My father, later in his life, turned much of his attention toward philanthropy, using the wealth he built to fund inner-city education, support youth programs, and improve healthcare initiatives. Watching him shift his focus from personal success to making a difference had a profound effect on me.
Because here’s the truth: We can’t take money with us. But we can leave behind a legacy that changes lives.
Education as a Legacy
One of the biggest ways we give back is through supporting inner-city Catholic schools. A lot of people assume that Catholic schools only serve Catholic families—but in many urban areas, these schools are a lifeline for kids from all backgrounds.
Many students in these communities come from low-income families who want a better education for their children but can’t afford private school tuition. Public schools in some of these areas are underfunded and overcrowded, leaving students without the resources they need to succeed.
That’s where we step in.
📚 What We Do:
✔️ Fund scholarships for kids who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend
✔️ Improve school facilities to create a safer, more effective learning environment
✔️ Provide resources and support to ensure students have the tools they need to succeed
✔️ Mentor and guide young students, helping them see a path to a future filled with opportunity
Education has always been a powerful tool for breaking cycles of poverty and giving kids a shot at something greater. I believe that everyone deserves access to a great education, regardless of where they come from. This initiative is one of the things I’m most proud of—because when you invest in education, you’re not just changing one life; you’re changing generations.
Horse Therapy for Young Women: Leadership Through Responsibility
One of the most unique programs we run is equine therapy for young women.
🐴 Why horses?
Because working with horses teaches lessons that go beyond riding—it’s about confidence, responsibility, and emotional growth.
Many of the girls who come through our program are struggling in some way. Some have gone through difficult family situations, others have battled self-doubt, and some just need a place where they feel like they belong.
When they join the program, they don’t just learn how to ride—they learn how to take care of an animal, how to trust, and how to lead.
🔹 What These Girls Learn:
✔️ How to care for something bigger than themselves – Horses require patience, dedication, and attention. These girls learn responsibility in a way that’s both fun and meaningful.
✔️ How to trust, lead, and work with others – Many of these young women come in lacking confidence in themselves. As they work with the horses, they develop leadership skills and learn to trust their instincts.
✔️ That they are capable of more than they ever imagined – The biggest transformation happens inside them. I’ve seen girls come in timid and uncertain, only to leave strong, confident, and ready to take on life’s challenges.
This program is special because it provides more than just an experience—it provides a community. These girls build friendships, gain mentors, and develop a sense of self-worth that lasts long after they leave.
Creating Real, Lasting Change
At the end of the day, business success is great, but impact is what truly matters. My father taught me that, and now I carry that lesson forward.
Whether it’s through education initiatives, youth programs, or community support, my goal is to use the resources I’ve been given to help others find their own path to success.
If you have the ability to give back—to mentor, to invest in people, to lift others up—I believe you should. Because legacy isn’t about what you accumulate; it’s about what you leave behind.
And for me, that’s what makes it all worth it.
Storytelling and the Power of Connection
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: People don’t connect with businesses—they connect with stories.
Every entrepreneur, every brand, every movement—it all comes down to the story behind it.
That’s why I love talking with Sherry Sutton on Heart of the Hustle. She understands that telling your story is one of the most powerful things you can do.
✔️ Your struggles are your strength – People connect with authenticity, not perfection.
✔️ Don’t just sell—storytell – Customers buy into the journey, not just the product.
✔️ Own your path – Your unique experiences are what make you stand out.
If you’re an entrepreneur, learn to tell your story. It’s the one thing no one else can replicate.
Segment 5: What Success Looks Like Now
If you asked me ten years ago what success meant, I would have given you a very different answer. Today, it’s not just about making money, growing businesses, or hitting the next milestone.
For me, success is:
✔️ Building something that lasts beyond me – A legacy of impact, not just income.
✔️ Being present for my family, my passions, and my well-being – Balance matters.
✔️ Creating opportunities for others – Because success means nothing if you don’t lift others up along the way.
I still work hard. I still take risks. But now, I make sure that everything I do has meaning, purpose, and real impact.
If you’re an entrepreneur, my advice is simple: Success isn’t just about the hustle. It’s about knowing when to push forward and when to step back. It’s about making your story count.
